Salient Features:
Gas Chlorination Systems are often used to provide water disinfection in facilities where water consumption is high. Gas chlorine is a yellow-green colored gas which is heavier than air under normal temperature and pressure conditions.
Salient Features:
Chlorine is a highly effective method of disinfection. However, while in the pipes it produces small amounts of chemicals (called “disinfection by-products”) if the source water has higher levels of dirt or germs that may react with chlorine.
Chlorine dioxide acts as an oxidizing agent and reacts with several cellular constituents, including the cell membrane of microbes by stealing electrons from them (oxidation); it breaks their molecular bonds, resulting in the death of the organism by the break-up of the cell.
Salient Features:
An electrolyzer (electro-chlorination equipment) prevents the adhesion of marine organisms such as microorganisms and shellfish by directly electrolyzing seawater or salt water to produce sodium hypochlorite.
Electrolyzers are installed and used in power plants, various other plants in coastal industrial areas, and ships.
They are also used for improving water quality, maintaining transparency, and sterilizing waterworks at facilities such as aquariums.
Salient Features:
UV light is a very effective disinfectant, although the disinfection can only occur inside the unit. Unlike chlorination, there is no residual disinfection in the water to inactivate bacteria that may survive or may be introduced after the water passes by the UV source.
